In leather work, there are different ways to finish the edges of a product. Some people don't finish edges at all, some people use edge paint and we like to burnish all our products edges with a natural burnishing cream and then seal it with wax. Depending on the leather type and how often you use the products, it may require a little edge maintenance or burnish touch up from time to time. This might be every few months or once a year, it's up to you and also depends how old the product is and how much patina it developed.
Here's a step by step guide on how to burnish the edges of your product using our edge maintenance kit which includes RMK Roo Goo, canvas and beeswax.
Instructions
1. Apply a thin layer of Roo Goo to the full edge of the leather you want to burnish. If you’re burnishing a large product, work on one side or section at a time.
2. Hold the canvas over your fingers, apply some pressure to the edge of the leather and rub back and forth until fully smooth. The edge should appear fully smooth when you're finished without any sections that are raw or "furry".
3. Gently rub the beeswax over the leather edge. Use the canvas to smooth the beeswax over the edge for extra protections and shine.
Notes
It's best to fully coat the edge of the leather product you are working on before burnishing with canvas. Be careful not to apply too much Roo Goo to the point that it's seeping onto the flesh and skin side.
Every leather type will vary so test on a small discrete section before using. Some leathers are more dry and will require more Roo Goo than others. With certain leathers you will have to avoid getting Roo Goo on the skin / top side of the leather. Other leathers can be more forgiving and the Roo Goo will disappear if you get it on the skin side once it’s dry.
Roo Goo is ideal for burnishing the edges of vegetable tanned leather but it can also be used on combination and chrome leathers. It is not intended for use on suede products.
If you are working with leather that has a rough or furry flesh side, you can also use Roo Goo to smoothen the flesh side.
